With the threat of the swine flu spreading across the globe, host Catherine Bradford welcomes Dr. Louise Murray, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM,  who serves as the Director of Medicine for the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital to discuss information about how, at times, illness in animals can transfer to humans. Commonly known as Zoonosis, (diseases passed from animals to humans) it is important to understand this condition, separate facts from fiction and learn what we can do to help maintain not only our own health but the health and well being of the animals of our planet.

Dr. Louise Murray, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, serves as the Director of Medicine for the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital (BMAH). Dr. Murray joined BMAH in 2004 after her employment with Manhattan Veterinary Group/ Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists where she worked as staff internist and intern director since 2002.  Prior to that, Dr. Murray worked as staff internist and intern director at VCA Veterinary Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  During that time she was also a co-supervisor for the Residency in Critical Care and Internal Medicine.  Dr. Murray is a graduate of Duke University and Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.  She completed her Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the Animal Medical Center in 1994 and finished her Residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Animal Medical Center in 1996.  Dr. Murray is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and brings her skills in ultrasonography and endoscopy to BMAH.
 
In addition to being published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) for her research regarding treatment of feline hyperthyroidism. Dr. Murray has led presentations and lectures on many topics including: feline hyperthyroidism, diagnosis and management of Cushing’s disease, endocrinology, acute renal failure, diabetes mellitus, hypercalcemia, and veterinary critical care. The Animal Medical Center in New York honored Dr. Murray with The Martin A. and Beatrice R. Weiser Memorial Award for Outstanding Research and The Carola Warburg Rothschild Human Animal Bond Award.  She was also the recipient of The American Association of Feline Practitioners Award for Outstanding Interest and Ability in Feline Medicine and Surgery and was elected into the Phi Zeta Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine. 

Dr. Murray has appeared on CNN American Morning and Anderson Cooper 360, ABC World News Tonight and Good Morning America, ABC 7 New York Viewpoint, NBC Nightly News, NBC 4 Live at 5, CBS The Early Show, CBS 2 News This Morning, MTV, FOX News Live, FOX 5 Good Day New York, and Animal Planet’s Animal Precinct, and has provided veterinary information to many magazines and newspapers including the New York Times, USA Today, the New York Post, the New York Daily News, People Magazine, and others. She has served on several veterinary committees and is a member of The American Veterinary Medical Association and The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Dr. Murray lives in Manhattan with her husband, Captain Peter Archer of the FDNY, and their two cats Dov and Siena.
